Resolving the Issue of Anomalous Breakage in Overmolded Components

CASE STUDY:
Resolving the Issue of Anomalous Breakage in Overmolded Components
CLIENT:
An Italian company operating in the vending machine sector.
THE CHALLENGE:
The company, with a bi-material product, approached us due to the appearance of cracks and anomalous breakages in the component a few hours after installation.
VPLAST SOLUTION:
Initially, it was assumed that the problem was related to the shape of the piece and the initial mold design. However, extensive internal testing revealed that the anomalous breakages in the component, occurring in different locations and inconsistently, were caused by varying shrinkage indices of the materials used.
Thanks to the specialized expertise of our technical team, we resolved the issue presented by the client through a component annealing process carried out in a dedicated oven at a specific temperature and for a determined period of time. This process effectively allowed us to manage the shrinkage of the various materials more gradually, thereby preventing cracks and anomalous breakages.
CLIENT BENEFITS:
- No modifications to the product's shape.
- No change in materials.
- Significant reduction in waste.
- Avoided costs of component replacement.
